Villiers came in, holding a manila folder. "Latest report from Bond."
M took it, glanced over its contents. Well, that was their suspicions about Dryden confirmed. That left her with only one course of action, and the slight hesitation before turning her attention back to Villiers had nothing to do with that course of action being Dryden's elimination. He knew what he was doing the instant he decided to hand over secrets to a buyer.
"Send Bond a message to proceed against Dryden, then arrange matters so it won't cause any disturbance locally," she said, handing the file back to Villiers.
If he had an opinion on the action she'd taken, he was too good an agent to let it show. Instead he gave her a sharp nod and a "Yes, ma'am," before walking out.
Rising from her desk, M fetched a glass and a bottle of bourbon from a nearby cabinet, pouring herself a small drink before heading back to her desk. A few swift keystrokes brought up Bond's file, a few more copied it into a new, more protected file, one that she had the sole ability to create.
Code Name: 007.
A few minutes later, the changes were saved, the birth of another Double-O complete. She leaned back in her chair, taking sip of her drink.
By God, she hoped she'd gotten this one right.

It was far later by the time her driver dropped her off in front of her building. She unlocked the front door, Villiers hovering under the portico until she was in the elevator and she'd inserted her key to close the doors.
She let out a sigh in the silence of the elevator; a silence suddenly broken by the ringing of her mobile. Scrambling in her purse, she heard the ding of the elevator announcing the arrival at her flat, and took a step out of the elevator, still looking for her phone.
Not a mistake she would usually make, but of course this one time, the consequences are something she never could have expected.
